Four local speedways teamed up in Proctor on Wednesday to announce some special events and changes for the summer racing season.
ABC Raceway in Ashland is celebrating its 50th birthday. In honor of the milestone, the track is introducing a racing hall of fame.
"In 50 years of racing, we figure we probably have enough people to start one," said Nick Gima. "We're going to have an inaugural class this year which we're going to introduce on our season opener."
Another late spring means a lot of work ahead for track crews, and some delays. But fans won't have to wait too long to hear those engines fire up.
"Everything looking real good over in Superior. The track looks great," said Joe Stariha. "Last year we had a lot of success with our crew and real happy with their progress on the track, and real excited to get going on the season."
Something new for Proctor Speedway and Amsoil Speedway is the use of transponder technology for more accurate race information.
"Transponders are electronic scoring devices so you can basically see who comes across the finish lines first, second, third," Stariha said. "It also times each lap for the drivers. They can go onto a website and see all their timed laps. It really just helps us with our lap counting. It takes a lot of the ambiguity out of it for the race car drivers, the track, and it saves a lot of time also."
And at Hibbing Raceway, weekend events continue to be family friendly.
"We have six or seven nights where we have huge kids nights events," said Rudy Aho. "We get kids involved in kids series, they get to get introduced to the drivers. It's huge."
Most tracks will open their doors this month and run races until after Labor Day.
