MnDOT Reschedules Blatnik Bridge Maintenance after Traffic Jam

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has rescheduled maintenance work on the Blatnik Bridge after the work caused major delays for drivers headed from Superior to Duluth Wednesday.

Workers had closed one of the bridge's two Duluth-bound lanes at the midday hours.  The Duluth-bound lanes of the Bong Bridge (U.S. Highway 2) are also closed for a major rehabilitation project, meaning the number of lanes from Superior to Duluth was reduced from four to one.  The Blatnik Bridge (U.S. Highway 53/I-535) is the official detour route for Bong Bridge traffic.

After seeing the traffic backup, MnDOT decided to postpone the work until later this summer.

"We will find a time to do the work when traffic is not as heavy. Our work often affects travel times, and we do our best to reduce delays when we can," said MnDOT District Engineer Duane Hill.

The Duluth-bound lanes of the Bong Bridge are scheduled to be closed until Nov. 1.  Next year, Superior-bound lanes will be closed.
