Carlton, Minn. - Saturday night was a good night to be Duluth's Al Sands as he stretched his win streak to 11, picked up his 12th knock out, 13th career victory and now has a title belt for both shoulders.
For the "Haitian Temptation," the night included a celebration....and a lot of perspiration as Sands won the NABA (North American Boxing Association) United States Cruiserweight Title and now, he has created a collection of championships.
"It feels really good to come out of a nine-round stoppage in a championship fight. It was really a great opportunity and a great fight," said Sands.
"Me and Al keep on joking around, but we knew this day would come and we just keep on shooting for the stars," said Zach Walters, Al's trainer.
It was last April at Black Bear Casino when Sands won the Minnesota Cruiserweight Title and a year later, he fought Keith "No Holds" Barr for the NABA U.S. Cruiserweight belt.
Barr battled and even landed a solid shot in the fifth round, staggering Sands a bit.
"(There were) little wake up calls. Keith was a live dog and throwing flurries to test out Al's conditioning to see if he was still alive and Al responded correctly and calmed Keith back down," said Walters.
Sands responded by knocking Barr down six times.
"he (Barr) has a really good poker face and I didn't know I was really hurting him, until he went down the first time," said Sands.
"Barr kept on getting up and Al was like, boy that guy is tough. I have been hit by Al, I used to spar with the guy and he can crack," said Walters.
"We were still knocking him down and that is when I realized I just needed to stay smart, stay the course and listen to my corner," said Sands.
In the ninth round, the referee stopped it as Sands earned the TKO victory and the NABA U.S. Cruiserweight Title.
"We are going to keep on pushing towards that goal man. Earn our way up the rankings and maybe acquire a couple more belts, we'll see, but Al is definitely on the right track," said Walters.
Having the NABA U.S. Cruiserweight Title allows for Sands to be listed in the rankings for the World Boxing Association.
