Three of 15 Iron County supervisors lost their seats Tuesday in a race where mining was the dominant issue.

Ten supervisors faced challenges amid the intense debate over Gogebic Taconite's proposed mine in Iron and Ashland counties.  Unofficial results show incumbent Tom Innes lost to Karl Krall, incumbent James Lambert lost to Victor Ouimette, and incumbent Gerald Luke lost to Brad Matson.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Ouimette, Matson and Krall were among seven candidates the group Americans for Prosperity branded as opposing Gogebic Taconite's plans.  The group circulated two mailings in Iron County in recent weeks aimed at getting supervisors who supported iron mining elected.

Seven other supervisors defeated challengers, while five were unopposed.
