Duluth is participating in a global movement to turn out the lights for Earth Hour.

The Aerial Lift Bridge shut off its lights for an hour on Saturday, starting at about 8:30 p.m. The Lake Superior Zoo, the Great Lakes Aquarium and the Hartley Nature Center also turned off the lights.

The zoo held an Earth Hour celebration with a campfire, star gazing and flashlight tours.

The purpose of Earth Hour is to encourage people to take personal accountability for their impact on the planet, and to encourage sustainable lifestyles.
