Four Northland colleges are raising awareness about the importance of fresh water during World Water Week.

At the University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday morning, students, staff and visitors to the Kirby Bus Hub found garbage bags filled with plastic bottles scattered around the floor.

Sustainability Coordinator Mindy Granley told Eyewitness News the display included the amount of bottles used on campus in a day, and was designed to get students thinking about making good choices that protect and conserve water.

"If students bring their own water they save money," Granley said. "It is better for the environment as well."

Events scheduled at UMD include a film about plastic bag use on Wednesday evening, a performance by the Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe on Thursday morning, and a talk on microplastics in the Great Lakes that afternoon. Find times here

Lake Superior College, the Fond du Lac Community College and the College of St. Scholastica are also raising awareness about fresh water this week.
