A Northland musher has earned Rookie of the Year honors at the Iditarod.

Warba native Nathan Schroeder crossed the finish line in Nome, Alaska Wednesday morning.

Schroeder placed 17th in the overall race, but was first among the rookie class.

"It was a good journey," Schroeder said of the more than 1000 mile race. "[I'm] very tired. My face is wind burned, nose got a little frostbite on it, but other than that the dogs are happy, healthy."

Schroeder made the journey from Anchorage to Nome in just under 9 days and 18 hours.

He says he plans to compete in the race again next year  if his wife lets him.
