Three Carleton College students were killed in a crash with a semi while traveling on an icy road near Northfield Friday, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The three played on the school's Ultimate Frisbee team, which finished third in the country last year, according to the college.

The broadside crash happened on Highway 3 at County Road 47 in Dakota County around 3 p.m.

According to the state patrol, an SUV carrying five students was northbound on Highway 3 when it spun out and went into the southbound lanes. The semi, which was southbound, hit the vehicle broadside on the passenger side.

According to the state patrol, James Adams, 20, of St. Paul; Paxton Harvieux, 21, of Stillwater; Michael Goodgame, 20, of Westport Conn., were killed in the crash. According Lt. Eric Roeske all three died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, William Sparks, 20, of Evanson, Ill., and Connor Eckert, 19, of Seattle, Wash.,were both hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center. Sparks was in satisfactory condition and Eckert was in serious condition Saturday morning.

The state patrol said everyone was wearing a seat belt.

Danny Terry, 56, of Pioneer, Tenn., was the driver of the semi and had no apparent injury, according to the state patrol.

“We offer our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of James, Michael and Paxton, and we hope and pray for the full recovery of Will and Conor,” Carleton President Steven G. Poskanzer said in a statement sent to the campus community. “The collective Carleton soul aches for the loss of these three young men. Right now, we need to focus all our love and compassion on supporting the families and friends of all these young men, along with everyone in our community who cares for them.”

Adams was a chemistry major, Harvieux was a computer science major and Goodgame was a political science major. All three were juniors. Sparks is an economics major and and Eckert, a freshman, had not declared a major.

Counseling services have been made available to students. A vigil was held at the college Saturday. Hundreds of students attended.

A memorial fund has been set up for Harvieux, according to a family member. Donations can be made at any TCF Bank branch to the "Paxton Harvieux Memorial Fund."
