The Historic Duluth Armory has a long history and this weekend folks will celebrate its rock and roll roots.
The Winter Dance Dance Party, a 50s-style event, will get underway Friday at the Greysolon Ballroom. Money raised will help support the Armory Arts and Music Center.
The party is meant to celebrate a historic concert that took place at the Duluth Armory back in 1959. Buddy Holly headlined the event.
A Duluth man who was at that concert shared some memories Tuesday.
"Buddy Holly was unbelievable," Jan Borg said. "It was a cold winter night. I took a bus down there and had to hitchhike back home. When he got on stage, the charisma, it was unbelievable."
Two days after that concert in Duluth, Buddy Holly was killed in a place crash. Borg said he's honored to have seen him perform.
The 1st Annual Winter Dance Party goes from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Greysolon on Friday.

Hors d'oeuvres will be served from Black Woods. Rock-A-Billy Revue will perform and there will be dancing, games and a silent auction.
Guests are encouraged to wear 50s-style clothing.
State Department: 3 Americans on Missing Plane
The State Department confirms that three Americans were aboard the Malaysia Airlines jet that vanished Saturday on a flight from Malaysia to Beijing. Vietnamese air force planes report spotting a pair of large oil slicks in the area where the Boeing 777 went missing.
Firefighters: 25 Pack into DECC Elevator, Get Stuck
Firefighters were called to the DECC in Duluth Friday after an elevator full of kids got stuck. According to the Duluth Fire Department, 25 kids got stuck in the elevator around 7:30 p.m. The DECC is playing host to the FIRST Robotics Competition.
'Frozen Photographers' Put on Show 3 Years in the Making
Twenty-four photographers exhibited their work at the Duluth Photography Institute on Friday. The artists are all associated with the Facebook group "Frozen Photographers," which is composed of more than 700 photographers from four countries.
