A Duluth man says a car flew about 60 feet before hitting a boulder near Lake Superior Tuesday morning.
Ken Greshowak, who lives on the 8700 block of Congdon Boulevard, said he called 911 after discovering the accident in front of his house just after sunrise.
Greshowak said "apparently this car got wedged between the guard rail and the woods, hit the cliff of the lake and probably catapulted 60 feet in the air and dropped probably 25 or 30 feet."
Inside, Greshowak found a man, later identified by police as Justin Lee Pfannes. He's at St. Luke's Hopsital in stable condition on Thursday, upgraded from critical on Tuesday.
He said that Pfannes "was in pretty tough shape. I saw that he only had a T-shirt on and I couldn't understand his speech. I thought this guy was going into shock so I took my coat off and put that on him and gave him reassurance that help was on the way."
Greshowak couldn't say how long Pfannes had been there but suspected several hours because the engine was cold.
"He actually looked at me and asked 'am I dead?' I said 'no, you're not, but you're missing a heck of a sunrise.'"
Photos from Greshowak show emergency responders on the scene, taking the victim away from the car on a stretcher.
