Essentia Health has been working with the Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Ashland, Wisconsin to provide cancer care since 2002. Now the two healthcare organizations are taking their work a step further by building a state-of-the-art, $12 million Cancer Center.

"We have done extensive research, and the need for additional services, especially radiation oncology, is significant," Jason Douglas, Cheif Executive Officer to MMC, said. "We've talked with local physicians and everyone agrees that this investment will greatly benefit cancer patients from our region who will no longer have to drive hundreds of miles to get the services they need."

The new facility will be named Northwest Wisconsin Cancer Center (NWCC) and will be in a brand new building located adjacent to MMC and Essentia Health-Asland Clinic. It will offer many of the same services provided at Essentia's Cancer Center in Duluth, according to Mike Metcalf, Executive Vice President Clinic Operations fro Essentia Health.

Cancer services at the new center will include infusion therapy, radiation and clinical trials. The STAR Cancer Rehabilitation Program will also be offered. It is a survivorship program and educational resource center.

Boldt Construction has been chosen as the contractor for the project with Kahler Slater serving as architect, according to Essentia Health Spokeswoman Maureen Talarico.

"This is a highly specialized project because the building will house linear accelerators, but we hope to take full advantage of our local workforce," Douglas said. "We plan to break ground in March, and if all goes as planned, the Northwest Wisconsin Cancer Center will open in August of 2015."
