The cost of heating is rising quickly for tens of thousands of Northlanders who rely on propane.

A gallon of propane is now selling for more than $5 a gallon, double the rate from just last week. Suppliers like Superior Fuel Company say a gas shortage is causing the soaring prices.

Many contract customers lock into a set price, but some companies have needed to pass the price spike on to customers. Managers at Superior Fuel Company say their company has not increased prices to any contract customers.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly one in five Northland homes use propane, with higher rates in rural areas.  That amounts to more than 34,000 households in the WDIO/WIRT viewing area.
