The Ashland County District Attorney has charged the 14-year-old defendant in December's homicide with one count First Degree Intentional Homicide and two counts Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide.
According to the criminal complaint, William J. Saari, 52, died from a combination of gun shot and stab wounds. Police say Saari and his wife were caring for the teenager.
Ashland Police responded to 1806 Cary Street on Dec. 16 in response to a weapons call.
The criminal complaint alleges the 14-year-old defendant shot Saari, shot at Saari's wife, and shot at a responding police officer who returned fire. Saari was the only one hit.
The medical examiner reports Saari was shot three times. In addition, he had 37 stab and slash wounds.
According to the complaint, the defendant admitted to shooting and stabbing Saari. He also gave a written statement to an investigator.
He allegedly said he had been watching a movie when he decided to go see his girlfriend, but he wasn't allowed. Then, "at about 7pm he got the idea of shooting his parents." The defendant allegedly got the rifle out of his parent's bedroom, shot Saari, shot at Saari's wife, then stabbed Saari multiple times.
The complaint said he told the investigator "his plan was to kill both his parents so he could leave the house and take their van to go pick up his girlfriend so they could leave the state."
The defendant will appear in court on Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m.
