Authorities have made an arrest in a homicide investigation stemming from a Monday morning incident in Babbitt.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says Babbitt authorities responded to 37 Astor Road to a report of a medical emergency around 11:15 a.m. When they arrived on the scene they found a man lying in the road not breathing.

Authorities said the man was taken to the Ely Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 55-year-old Paul John Bulen, of Mahtomedi. The suspect is a 24-year-old man is in custody awaiting formal charges, according to authorities.

Monday evening, yellow crime scene tape blocked off part of Astor Road where it meets Acacia Road in a neighborhood. A half dozen investigators could be seen searching the snowy ground and the inside of the suspect's home with flashlights. A Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension van was also on the scene.

Fifteen-year-old Tanner Sweet, who lives about a block away, said seeing the scene made him concerned for the safety of his family and friends.

But according to St. Louis County Lt. Ed Kippley, this was not a random incident. He said the parties knew each other and did not believe anyone else in the community was involved.

Kippley said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning. He said the suspect will appear in court for the first time on Wednesday.
