New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau say Minnesota is outpacing the nation and the Midwest in population growth.

Minnesota's population is estimated to be 5,420,380 as of July 1, 2013.  That's up 0.8 percent from last year.

Wisconsin's population is estimated to have grown 0.3 percent to 5,742,713, while Michigan's population is estimated to have grown 0.1 percent to 9,895,622.  That's a turnaround from 2011, when Michigan posted an estimated population loss.

The national estimated growth rate was 0.7 percent, and the Midwest's was 0.3 percent.

Elsewhere, the oil boom is apparently helping North Dakota grow at the fastest rate in the nation of 3.1 percent.  West Virginia is the only state with an estimated population loss.

The count isn't as precise as the once-a-decade population surveys. The last one of those was done in 2010 and put the Minnesota population at 5,303,925 people.

By this year's estimate, Minnesota clocks in as the 21st most populous state. Wisconsin comes in at No. 20.
