A fire caused $35,000 in damage to a Duluth home on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to the fire on the 600 block of E. Fifth Street at about 3:30 a.m. The blaze was in the second-floor kitchen, according to authorities. The fire was extinguished quickly and crews were on scene over an hour, according to the Duluth Fire Department.

Officials say the homeowners tried to put the fire out with a bucket of water before getting out of the building. Firefighters did rescue a cat and dog that were still inside the building, and officials said the animals were recovering after receiving on-scene medical treatment.

Officials report the damage to the structure at about $35,000, and the cause is under investigation.
