Officials at Regions Hospital in St. Paul say that the UMD student fighting to recover from severe hypothermia has been upgraded from critical condition to serious condition.

Hospital officials confirmed her condition Tuesday evening.

Alyssa Lommel had been in critical condition since she spent close to nine hours overnight in sub-zero temperatures after being dropped off by her friends earlier this month.

Alyssa's mother wrote on her Caringbridge page that her daughter is off the ventilator and is breathing with the help of nasal oxygen.

She was also able to eat some ice chips.

However, doctors are getting close to being ready to start doing some amputations. But they have to wait until she fully understands what is happening to her.

The 19-year-old is a student at UMD. She is originally from St. Cloud.
