In the parking lot of Superior's Mariner Mall are piles of sand covered in ice and snow. Soon, however, that sand will be warm and toasty.
"I'm hoping that the sand temperature will be pretty close to 80 degrees," said Kevin Holm.
Holm is bringing a new business to the Northland. It's a business, he said, there's a need for here.
"There's over 600 sand volleyball teams in Duluth, Superior, and Cloquet during the summer. There's only about 120 in the winter because of lack of facilities, and even all of those are hard courts," explained Holm.
So he has designed Superior Sands. With three heated sand volleyball courts and a bar and grill, they'll be the only facility like it in the area.
Holm said they'll have the competition for those who want it, and for those just wanting to have fun, there's a recreational league.
"It's a little level of seriousness, I think they can relax a little bit more and have a beverage while they are playing or have a snack or whatever and hangout with their friends. It's kind of a night out," said Holm.
Down the road, Holm said they might add more sand activities like Zumba, or maybe something a little more rough.
"We think that sand dodgeball might be kind of fun so we're going to look into seeing if there's any interest in playing that as well," he said.
The sand volleyball leagues begin in early January. You can sign up now online at http://www.superiorsands.com/.
