2 Announce Candidacy for Huntley Seat

A Democrat and a Republican have announced their candidacies for the Minnesota House of Representatives seat currently held by Rep. Tom Huntley (DFL-Duluth).

Republican Donna Bergstrom announced her candidacy Wednesday and DFL'er Linda Krug announced her candidacy Thursday.  Both hope to gain party endorsements to run in the Nov. 2014 election to replace Huntley, who announced Tuesday he would not seek re-election to East Duluth's District 7A House seat after serving 11 two-year terms.

Bergstrom is a retired Marine Corps Reserve Intelligence Officer, former member of the Duluth American Indian Commission, and enrolled member of the Red Lake band.

"I grew up in this area, my grandfather was born in Duluth, and I have extended family here – I consider this to be where my roots are. While my military and private-sector careers took me to many different places, I always knew I'd come back. I believe in our State, first and foremost, and I believe in the people who live here," Bergstrom said in a statement.

Krug has served on the Duluth City Council since 2012 and co-directs the Masters in Advocacy and Political Leadership program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she previously served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

"I know how important it is for Duluth to have a strong voice at the Capitol," Krug said in a statement.  "As a city, we have felt the impact of the changing face of Local Government Aid.  As a community we have suffered because there was no mechanism at the state level to shut down Last Place on Earth and stop the sale of synthetic drugs. Our workers and our economic vitality are vulnerable when the minimum wage stagnates and when our bonding projects do not make the final list."

Official candidate filing for the election will not begin until May 2014.  Primary elections will be held in August for races with more than one candidate per party.
