Jefferson Lines is ending bus service between Duluth and Eau Claire, a move that also affects a number of small towns between the two cities.

The company announced Wednesday it would discontinue the two-year-old Duluth-Eau Claire route as of Jan. 6, 2014 due to low ridership.  Solon Springs, Minong, Spooner, Rice Lake, Chetek and Bloomer had also been on the route and no longer have Jefferson Lines service.

"We never like discontinuing service to an area, but running this route with so few riders simply isn’t efficient," said Kevin Pursey, Director of Marketing at Jefferson Lines, in a press release

Jefferson Lines still offers service from Duluth to Minneapolis, and Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls are still served by a Jefferson Lines route from Minneapolis to Green Bay.

This story has been updated to change the date service will end.  Jefferson Lines' original announcement said service ended Dec. 6.
