Duluth councilors have OK'd a measure bringing the city one step closer toward allowing the use of all-terrain-vehicles on public property.

Councilors passed a resolution Monday night, authored by Councilor Jay Fosle, asking city staff to review the feasibility of opening city trails to ATV use. The vote was 8-1, with Councilor Jennifer Julsrud voting in the minority. Councilors also approved an amendment limiting trails being considered to those west of Cody Street. Fosle suggests using an old railroad bed as a trail.

ATV use has been banned on public property in Duluth for about a decade.

Fosle told Eyewitness News first that initially he wants to open one trail up for the machines. He has also mentioned asking the riders to pay for permits to help cover cost of trail maintenance.
