Wis. Bill Would Require 30 Minutes of Daily Gym Class

Created: 12/09/2013 1:52 PM WDIO.com

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Elementary school students in Wisconsin would have at least half an hour of daily physical education under a bill backed by Republican Rep. Chad Weininger, of Green Bay.

Weininger was joined by health advocates Monday in announcing his plans to introduce the bill.

Current law requires physical education three times a week for an unspecified amount of time. The daily gym class requirement was dropped in the late 1980s.

Weininger says his bill is based on national recommendations by the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and the Institutes of Medicine.

Data from the state Department of Health Services shows that one in four Wisconsin adolescents are overweight or obese.
