A land exchange between the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Carlton County is closer to a reality.
The US House of Representatives took up the bill Tuesday that would would allow about 3,200 acres owned by the County within the Fond du Lac Reservation to be swapped for 1,451 acres of equal-valued land the band owns outside the reservation.
Rep. Rick Nolan (D-MN) authored the bill, and says it helps both parties.
"The agreement provides space for the band to construct much-needed housing for its 6,700 members, as well as for traditional hunting and gathering and other native activities," said Nolan on the House floor Tuesday. "For Carlton County, it opens up valuable new timber and forestry resources."
The bill passed on a voice vote.
Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is pushing a companion bill through the US Senate.
