Duluth-based ZMC Hotels is proposing to build a $9.5 million Hampton Inn & Suites in Hibbing.
Plans calls for the hotel to be built where the vacant Ogle's Family Foods store now stands. The building would be demolished in December, and construction of the 80-room, three-story hotel could begin in May 2014, pending finalization of development agreements between Duluth-based ZMC Hotels, the City of Hibbing, and the IRRRB.
The City of Hibbing and IRRRB would provide assistance in the form of tax increment financing and grants to demolish the former grocery store, perform soil correction work, and add utilities and other infrastructure, according to a statement from ZMC Hotels.
If everything goes according to plan, the hotel would open in early 2015, and will employ about 20 people.
"There's a need for additional hotel rooms in Hibbing, and ZMC is committed to building what will be the crown jewel of hotels on the entire Iron Range," said ZMC Hotels' Board Chair and CEO Ken Goldfine in a statement Wednesday.
ZMC Hotels owns several hotels in the Twin Ports, including the Edgewater Hotel and Waterpark, the Inn on Lake Superior, and the Best Western Downtown in Duluth, and the Best Western Bridgeview, in Superior.
