The gales of November have caused shipwrecks on Lake Superior, and a local museum is used that history to raise money on Saturday.
Much of the maritime history of Lake Superior is documented at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth's Canal Park. Museum leaders used that exciting history to raise money at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center on Saturday.
The gales of November may be bad for ships, but they make for great stories according to the museum president, Jerry Sandvick.
“And just some fascinating stories. I don't know how you can not be interested in shipwrecks, and survivors, and the lighthouse keepers stories of Split Rock and over by Marquette and so on. It's a fascinating story of history; it really is,” Sandvick said.
Speakers presented that history at the Gales of November event, and there was a silent auction full of maritime memorabilia. The auction and a cruise giveaway helped the museum raise money to keep steaming ahead.
