A special prosecutor will provide an update on the investigation involving Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell on Thursday.

According to court documents, Scannell had a romantic relationship with a 17-year-old girl he's known since she was a child.  It's been almost a year since the news broke and almost seven months since a special prosecutor began his investigation.

Scannell is now on medical leave, according to the county. He requested it about two weeks ago.

On his online blog, Scannell said it’s been a "hurtful" time.  A post from Wednesday indicates that he even contemplated taking his own life in recent months.

Last December, the 17-year-old girl's family asked for and was granted a restraining order against him. The order says that Scannell confessed he was in love with the girl in September of 2012.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to look into the case, and Judge Shaun Floerke appointed former U.S. Attorney Thomas Heffelfinger to consider charges.

Those two parties will hold a press conference on the front steps of the Cook County Courthouse Thursday at 10 a.m.

A group of citizens have been protesting over Scannell's continued position as county attorney each Friday for months, and have said they will until Scannell leaves office. He's up for re-election next fall.

Eyewitness News reached Scannell over the phone Wednesday morning. He told us he is doing well, but had no comment.
