Northland vocal students are getting some expert instruction for a limited time.
New York Metropolitan Opera Star Sasha Cooke is in town, and the mezzo-soprano is taking time out of her schedule to offer master classes to area high school and college vocal students. The classes are put on by Duluth's Matinee Musicale and run through Thursday.
Cally Stanich, a sophomore at Hermantown High School, took the class Saturday at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Duluth. She said she was amazed at the opportunity.
"It was kind of intimidating at first, but she really is just such a personable person," she said. "Once you got up there and let it all out, she just made you feel welcome and a part of the family."
Cooke is performing at UMD's Weber Music Hall Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
