Duluth's "Ultimate Hockey Mom" was honored Saturday with her own concession stand.
In addition to having seven sons who played hockey, Shirley Kirsch became known for taking UMD and St. Scholastica hockey players into her home. Now, the community is coming together to honor her by raising money for the Duluth Heritage Sports Center.
The Sports Center is also renaming one of its concession stands "Shirley's Kitchen," in honor of Kirsch and her legendary soup. According to her son, though, it's not just Kirsch's home cooking that makes her so many friends.
"The thing with my mother, which is a great characteristic: She can meet someone one minute and they're best friends the next minute," said Mike Kirsch. "And that's a real quality. She makes everybody feel comfortable whenever she meets anybody."
