A two-year-long rehabilitation project on the Blatnik Bridge (I-535) is nearing an end, with the final lane restrictions slated to end today.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the right lane on the Duluth-bound side of the bridge, which has been closed all summer, will reopen at about 6 p.m. There have also been short-term lane restrictions on the Superior-bound side of the bridge this summer.
Drivers may still find temporary lane closures next week as workers do minor finishing work. MnDOT expects the entire project to be completed next week.
Work on the bridge included sandblasting and repainting the main span truss, repairing and strengthening gusset plates, and installing a new LED lighting system on the center span of the bridge. The new lights will be lit for the first time on the evening of Friday, Oct. 25.
