Demolition is underway on a long-closed Two Harbors industrial site that some had sought to preserve.
City leaders used a symbolic golden sledgehammer on the former JJ Castings and Roundhouse site Tuesday afternoon, and demolition equipment moved in shortly afterwards. Despite recent efforts to save the roundhouse, Mayor Randy Bolen said the nine buildings have been dormant for mroe than four decades and are now derelict.
"Over the last several years it has become apparent that the only thing and only option to us is to demolish these buildings, bring them to grade, and bring economic development and jobs into our community," Bolen said.
The 22-acre site is near the ore docks and has rail, water, and road access. The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board is helping to pay for the demolition.
