First District School Board Candidates Rosie Loeffler-Kemp and Joe Matthes participated in a forum Thursday at Valentini's restaurant in Duluth.
They both said that they support sustaining—and increasing—the operating levy, which will be voted on this fall.
"The money that we're going to put out, we're going to put into the classrooms," Matthes said. "We're going to make sure that we can do better, we can add 7th period back, we can decrease the achievement gap, we can try to increase graduation rates and decrease our class sizes."
Matthes said he believes there is strong public support for the levy.
Loeffler-Kemp said she has been going door to door and also feels that the community supports it.
"I also over the last 20 years have worked on many levies," she said, "and I am very proud of helping to get art, music and phy ed in all of our elementary schools."
