The first day of fall is Sunday, but Lutsen Mountains is already gearing up for winter with a big improvement project wrapping up Friday.
A helicopter was carrying supports for a new and improved lift system called the Caribou Express. The high speed lift will carry more passengers per chair and reduce the ride up Moose Mountain from 10 minutes to only 3.5. Marketing director Jim Vick says that means triple the time on the hill for guests.
"Whether they're up here for the weekend they'll get all of their fill," said Vick. "We haven't done the final calculation, we'll see when we're out skiing. I think it's probably potentially more than 60,000 feet of vertical in a day"
Vick expects the lift to draw in more guests, and says it will be ready for skiers in December.
