Kemps LLC announced it will be closing its Duluth milk processing facility on October 4, 2013, due to declining milk production volumes.
When Franklin Foods no longer processes milk next month, Kemps spokesperson, Rachel Kyllo, says 38 employees will lose their job. Franklin Foods has been in operation in Duluth's Lincoln Park neighborhood since 1982.
Kyllo says Franklin Foods has a total of 63 employees. The company will continue to sell and distribute the Arrowhead milk brand. 25 employees in sales and distribution will continue to work with Franklin Foods.
Kyllo says they will still take milk in from the same farmers, but the milk will now be processed at their Minneapolis facility and then transported back to the Duluth distribution center. She says the change will not impact milk prices.
In a prepared statement, Kemps said, "Franklin Foods has a long history of successful operations and has provided excellence in customer service. We are grateful to all of the Franklin Foods employees for their hard work and dedication. "
Franklin Foods is the only Kemps processing plant closing. There are four other plants in Minneapolis, Rochester, Fargo, ND, and Cedarburg, WI. Franklin Foods currently has the only milk processing plant in Duluth.
