The Duluth community is celebrating an economic milestone, with the grand opening of a new anchor store at the Miller Hill Mall. It comes as the mall marks its 40th anniversary.
Dick's is the fourth anchor tenant at the mall. They held what they call their "soft opening" earlier this week so employees would have time to work out bugs with their systems and registers.
A manager said the store employs 75 people and 15 of those jobs are full time.
Meanwhile, Dick's Minnesota Community Marketing Manager Matt Teske said the store is the 529th to open nationwide and the ninth in Minnesota.
"It has been exciting to get the folks in the door...from our standpoint we saw an opportunity to serve a market with folks that are outdoor-minded, team sports-minded," Teske told Eyewitness News.
The mall said the construction of Dick's is the largest upgrade the mall has seen since an expansion 25 years ago doubled its size.
At a ribbon cutting Friday morning, City Councilor Dan Hartman highlighted the importance of the mall and said it is what brought in surrounding businesses. He said if the mall had not come, much of the expansion around it wouldn't have happened.
Grand opening promotions at Dick's continue through the weekend. Minnesota Wild backup goalie Josh Harding will visit on Sunday.
