MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A Republican lawmaker says the Legislature must close the woods around a northern Wisconsin mine site to protect miners and public workers from protesters.
Senator Tom Tiffany has proposed a bill that would close around 4,000 acres in the Penokee Hills while Gogebic Taconite is exploring digging a iron mine there.
Tiffany kicked off a public hearing on the bill in front of the Senate mining committee today by showing a video recording of protesters accosting mine workers at the site in June.
George Meyer, of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, says that closing the land might cause a different kind of protest.
"I can tell you that just from the reaction I got over the weekend from hunters... this may upset a bunch of hunters, which would in fact cause more opposition to the mine," said Meyer.
The Wisconsin legislature is not expected to reconvene until later this month or next month.
