More than 400 athletes prepared Saturday night to face the lake, and each other, in the morning.
The Superior Man Triathlon, presented by Duluth Running Company, takes place Sunday. Duluth Running Company Co-Owner Clint Agar is also the triathlon director.
"Tomorrow they'll embark on a journey where they're going to jump off the Vista Fleet cruise ship into the bay of Lake Superior," Agar said. "They'll swim 1.2 miles, they'll come into the DECC arena and grab their bikes."
From the DECC, the athletes will bike up Highway 61 to Two Harbors, then back to the DECC. From there they run through a looping course, ending up at Bayfront Festival Park.
The event draws athletes from 16 states and even a few provinces, as well as hundreds of volunteers. Agar said they were preparing athletes Saturday for the expected hot weather.
"Tomorrow's going to be very hot and humid," he said. "The lake is also quite cold right now, too. So it creates some challenges above and beyond the distance."
The first wave of athletes will brave the heat at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, and the second at 7:10.
