Tiawain Albert Johnson, originally from Chicago, appeared in Douglas County court Friday. Johnson pled not guilty to first degree intentional homicide.
Johnson was arrested in June following more than a year of investigation. Superior police say Johnson fatally shot a man in January 2012.
Toriano Dawen Cooper was shot and killed outside of a residence on the 1900 block of North 12th Street just after 10 a.m. on January 15, according to police.
Police said Johnson was staying in Superior at the time of the homicide, but returned to Chicago area after the shooting where is currently being held in jail on an unrelated charge.
Police said the investigation uncovered that a robbery incident, allegedly involving Cooper and Johnson, happened a few weeks prior to the shooting. They said the shooting is believed to be an act of retaliation for that robbery.
Johnson will next appear in court October 25.
