The Duluth Fire and Parks and Recreation Departments unveiled a new electronic rip current sign Monday.
The sign is at the "S" curve on Park Point, at 12th Street and Minnesota Avenue. It will tell beachgoers what the current surf conditions are, how that affects their safety, and which beaches have lifeguards present.
Deputy Fire Chief Charlie Smith said the sign is an addition to the previous system of using beach flags to indicate surf conditions.
"It gives us a lot of ability to change at a moment's notice when the surf conditions are changing," Smith said. "Many beachgoers didn't know what the surf conditions were and what they meant. So this sign will be an enhancement to that program, and be able to give people the ability to see what the surf conditions are on a visual basis."
