Sen. Amy Klobuchar joined five families from around the state Sunday at the University of Minnesota to call for funding for medical research.

"When you think about the research that goes on, obviously we all know that it can save lives and it can make people's lives better," Klobuchar said. "But we also have to think of it in terms of, that it can actually save money."

The families who joined Klobuchar are all impacted by disease. The Arntsen family, from Duluth, knows firsthand the value of increased medical research. Two of their three daughters have type 1 diabetes.

Klobuchar said she wants to be able to tell the stories of these families in Washington.

"So they don't see things just as a number that doesn't matter," she said. "That it's real people with real problems and real diseases that need to be cured and need to be treated."

Klobuchar is calling on her colleagues to fully fund National Institutes of Health.
