Little Isaiah Tillotson had no idea he was moving from the old NICU, into the new one. The staff carefully unplugged all of the equipment, and wheeled him carefully into a private room. His parents followed close behind.
"He's breathing on his own, and growing. He weighed three and a half pounds, and was nine weeks early," said mom Marcia.
She and her husband Keith really enjoy the new NICU space.
"It's much more private and quiet," she added. Keith said, "It will be nice, when I'm driving back and forth to work, knowing she has her own space. And it will be nice to be together as a family."
That was the goal of the new NICU. Instead of one large room where all the babies and staff are together, there are now 18 private patient rooms.
Nurses tell us that it will take some getting used to. But they helped design the layout of the new space to be efficient for them, and they have some new equipment to make things easier to care for the babies.
This project has been in the works for years, and took donations from all kinds of community members and groups to become a reality.
The old NICU space will become offices.
