This week, thousands of people from all over the country will flock to Duluth for the greatest spectacular on Lake Superior. Tall Ships Duluth starts this Thursday, July 25 and runs through Sunday with a Tall Ships Challenge race on Monday.
Visit Duluth President and CEO, Terry Mattson, stopped by Good Morning Northland Tuesday to talk about the massive event that brings a lot of business to our area.
"Visit Duluth brings in Tall Ships every few years," Mattson said, "It's the biggest event in Northern Minnesota. We have weekend attendance that rivals the State Fair."
Tall Ships Duluth 2013 kids off with a Grand Parade of Sail at about 2 p.m. Thursday underneath Duluth's Aerial Lift Bridge and into Canal Park. A rare chance to see those grand ships of yore, brining history to life right before your eyes.
"There's something very special about it," Mattson said. "The ships are the starts but there are so many other things to do with entertainment, crafts, vendors and education."
Tall Ships Duluth brings in tourists from all over the country with tickets purchased from about 47 states, Mattson said.
"We like sharing everything we love about this place," Mattson said. He also added that this event has an economic impact of about $50 million in direct spending in the area.
Tickets will be available starting at 12 p.m. on Thursday, July 25. They can be purchased at the two main festival gates along Harbor Drive and Bayfront Festival Park. Opening ceremonies start at 4 p.m. that day, dockside behind the DECC. Gates are then open until 11 p.m.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday the festival gates are open from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. with on-board tours until 5 p.m. Dockside passes with access to the festival grounds are $6 for one day and $11 for a multi-day pass. Four-day passes, including ship tours, are $17 each.
The ships will begin their departure Monday at noon for the start of the Tall Ships Challenge.
