Northshore Mining has restarted an idled furnace line. And it's not just any restart.
This is about their quest to possibly produce direct-reduced iron grade pellets, which are very low silica compared to the traditional iron ore pellet. These pellets could be used to feed a DRI plant, which is considered the wave of the future by many in the steel industry.
To test the feasibility of making these pellets, they are running a test at the plant in Silver Bay.
And to run the test, which requires the restart of the line, 18 of the laid of workers have been called back, temporarily. The company estimates it will be about 3-6 weeks, and then the workers will go back on layoff status,
The re-start began on Monday.
