The 500 block of W. Superior St. shut down Wednesday night after a valve on a water main burst.

Construction workers on the scene said about two feet of standing water was sitting in the tunnel between the Radisson Hotel and the Duluth Public Library.

Eyewitnesses said there was also a frozen sheet of ice on Superior St. from 4th to 5th Avenues W.

A Minnesota Power worker on the scene said the break is affecting power in the area.

Construction workers had sump pumps running in the tunnel to remove the standing water. They are also digging up Superior St. in attempts to get at the valve break. They say the break was probably not weather-related, but instead that the pipes are old.

Meanwhile, just blocks away, a separate water main broke near 1st St. and 3rd Ave W. The Duluth Fire Department said the break happened just before midnight.

An Eyewitness News crew on the scene was asked to leave the area because the sidewalk was eroding and not safe.
