Bishop Paul Sirba, leader of the Duluth Diocese, weighed in on the choice of Pope Francis.

"Ever since Pope Benedict Emeritus resigned, we've been praying as a diocese for whomever the Lord chooses to be the next successor. And today has been a day of great enthusiasm and excitement."

When asked about Pope Francis and how he's the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit Pope, Sirba said it shows the trend of the Catholic church.

"I think it speaks to something about the universal nature of our church. He will speak to the Americas. It's the same message, but new for us."

He added, "I'm also excited about the local connections. We have three seminarians who were probably in St. Peter's Square, watching the announcement. And for World Youth Day, which is in Brazil, we're taking a group down there."
