Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm crossed the finish line, winning the 2013 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

Cold weather made for a good run Wednesday morning from Two Harbors to Duluth. Even with an early finish, there were plenty of fans cheering Schroeder and his team in.

"It was extremely awesome," said Schroeder after his finish. "Last time I did that run two years ago it was was the worst run of my life."

Less than an hour after Schroeder's finish, Keith Aili of Ray crossed the finish line with his team.

"All you're hoping for is colder weather and for it to set-up," said Aili. "It never happened until the end and it was too late. That's the way it goes, I still had a good race. I'm happy."

In it's 29th year, the Beargrease is all about tradition. Every year she can make it, Barbara Schilling of West Duluth is at the finish line cheering on the teams.

"It's very exciting. I, unfortunately, didn't make it in time for the top two finishers, but I'm here waiting for the third finisher to come in," said Schilling.

While for some fans, this is another year of their Beargrease tradition, this was 11-year-old Chloe Ouren's first sled dog race.

"It was awesome," said Ouren. "It was really cool because I've never seen it before."

After months of uncertainty due to the weather, fans were happy the Beargrease came through this year, and many are already looking forward to the race in 2014.

Wednesday afternoon, Odin Jorgenson of Grand Marais crossed the finish line, followed by Amanda Vogel of Ray.
