An inmate died of a "catastrophic medical event" at the Douglas County Jail last Friday, the Sheriff's office said Tuesday in a press release.
According to the release, preliminary results of an autopsy found Clifton G. Walker, 37, died of massive internal bleeding due to a perforated ulcer that ruptured an artery in the stomach lining.
Rumors of a jail death had first surfaced Saturday, but officials with the jail and Sheriff's office did not confirm the death until Tuesday.
According to the Sheriff's office, Walker had told other inmates he was not feeling well and was going to lie down. He was later found in distress and corrections officers began first aid.
The press release said Walker stopped breathing before paramedics arrived, and that officers initiated CPR. The release said efforts to revive Walker were unsuccessful. According to the Sheriff's office, an autopsy was done Saturday in Anoka County, Minnesota.
The release says the death remains under investigation by the Sheriff's office and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
