Vivian, one of the two seals from the Lake Superior Zoo that garnered national attention after escaping during June's flooding in Duluth, has been euthanized.

Vivian had been living at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul since the floods. Officials there said they had to perform emergency exploratory surgery after they observed the seal losing weight and being lethargic.

In December, Vivian had surgery to remove a blockage in her stomach. On Saturday, during the emergency surgery, they found "considerable" scar tissue from the previous surgery, and fusing of the intenstine to itself.

The medical team, made up of University of Minnesota veterinary staff and Como Park veterinary staff, said they made the difficult decision to euthanize the 23-year-old seal on Saturday after considering her future quality of life.
