The Duluth police officer accused of assaulting a man at the city's detoxification center last fall wants his case heard in a different county.
In a motion hearing Friday afternoon, officer Richard Jouppi's attorney asked for a change of venue. He asked that the case be transferred to either Pine or Washington County.
Jouppi faces misdemeanor charges of assault and disorderly conduct. He was charged following the release of surveillance video showing him hitting Anthony Jon Jackson multiple times on September 21, 2012.
Jouppi's attorney said the video has been widely publicized by the media and online. Because of it, he argued Jouppi won't get a fair trial in Duluth.
In response, the prosecution said jurors should be individually questioned about their knowledge of the alleged incident before trial.
The judge will be making a ruling on the change of venue request within the next two months.
