A major Wisconsin-based convenience store chain is considering an expansion to the Twin Ports.
Kwik Trip is considering a couple of sites in Duluth and Superior, according to Hans Zietlow, the company's Director of Real Estate.
One of those locations is the former site of Superior's Central High School, later Central Middle School, at the corner of Belknap Street and Grand Avenue. The site is now owned by Atwater Group and is part of the city's Central Blaine Planned Development District.
The city's Planning Commission would have to agree to zoning changes for a gas station to be built at the site. The Superior City Council is expected to refer the matter to the commission at its Tuesday meeting.
The store proposed for the Belknap Street site would cost about $5.5 million to build and have about 32 employees, according to a letter from Kwik Trip Chief Financial Officer Scott J. Teigen to Jason Serck, Superior's Planning Director. The letter said half of the jobs would be full-time and the total annual payroll would exceed $800,000.
Kwik Trip has about 350 stores in the Midwest, including locations in Hayward, Spooner, and the Twin Cities.
