The driver of a United Taconite diesel fuel truck was injured when the truck tipped on its side Friday morning, according to the Eveleth Fire Department.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. at the Thunderbird Mine. The driver was trapped in the cab and had to be extricated, and was then taken by ambulance to a Duluth hospital. There were no other occupants of the vehicle.
A statement from Cliffs Natural Resources said the man's injuries are not life-threatening.
Cliffs said fuel spilled during the accident has been contained and clean-up efforts are underway. The incident has been reported to St. Louis County Mine Inspector’s Office, Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
The fire department said roads in the mine area were very slippery at the time of the crash, but the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. Cliffs is conducting an investigation with assistance from the United Steelworkers Union.
